District curriculum staff presented the first reading of requested instructional materials for AP Spanish language (Temas), AP Spanish literature (Azulejo) and an elementary social-studies curriculum (My World Interactive).
Miss Flores explained the textbook-adoption process and said AP titles were selected because the College Board updated AP expectations and older AP texts are no longer aligned. The AP Spanish language adoption cost was presented as $65,135.51 covering an eight-year adoption for Christopher and Gilroy high schools; the AP Spanish literature adoption was listed at $22,671.11 for an eight-year term. Jean Sakahara presented the elementary social-studies adoption recommendation (My World Interactive by Sabas Publishing) with an estimated cost of $941,170 for an eight-year adoption; staff said those costs would be covered through restricted lottery and arts-and-music block grant funds.
Board members asked for copies of the materials to be made available in the lobby for review (the items were presented as part 1: first reading). Trustees questioned how updates would affect instruction; staff emphasized alignment to California Department of Education standards, digital materials included, and professional development for teachers as part of the adoption package.
Because this was a first reading, no action was taken; the board will consider the matter again after public review of materials.
