April Homi, executive administrative assistant in the city manager’s office, told the committee that Trex and partners have donated 10 benches and eight planter boxes for placement at the Fernley cemetery and asked the committee to approve accepting the donation.
Lisa Callahan moved to accept the benches and planters and to make arrangements for placement; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote with no opposition. Homi said the benches will be secured under the cemetery gazebo on the concrete with L‑brackets and that irrigation will be provided for the planters; she recommended placing the planters around the gazebo’s south entrance near the flagpole.
Committee members asked who would maintain plantings. Homi said the city would handle a portion of maintenance and irrigation and that volunteers or a small committee could assist; she offered to reach out to local schools and youth groups for volunteer support. Members agreed October—potentially Oct. 10 after the committee meeting—would be a good time to determine final placement and planting dates so staff and volunteers can be scheduled.
Separately, Casey Caston briefed the committee on the mayor’s Clean Sweep scheduled for Sept. 13, noting Redwood Materials and an environmental-waste partner may provide electronics and large-item recycling at the event. Committee members also reviewed routine items including the 2025 fan drive and plans to host an Angel Tree program again this winter.
