The Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District board unanimously adopted a student‑authored resolution on April 24 recognizing May 2024 as Mental Health Awareness Month.
Student board member Sydney read the resolution (No. 162324), which cites national awareness efforts and data from NAMI about youth mental health. The resolution calls for district activities — such as student speakers, parent workshops, increased visibility for mental‑health resources and consideration of symbolic recognition (for example, a green‑ribbon week) — to reduce stigma and connect students to support. "Mental health is important at every stage of life," Sydney told the board as she read the resolution.
Trustees praised the students’ work and offered suggestions for district action, including resuming parent workshops run by SAGE therapists, piloting peer speaker programs in middle schools, and considering curriculum integration of mental‑health education. The board voted to adopt the resolution by a unanimous voice vote.
Board members asked staff to consider operational steps for supporting student mental health and suggested future agenda items to track outcomes and resources available across sites.
