Cook County School District 130’s board voted Feb. 17 to adopt the 2026–27 academic calendar after questions from members about the timing of the first day of school, graduation scheduling and emergency‑day procedures.
Administration explained that one proposed schedule begins with an institute (teacher) day on Aug. 10 and the first full student day on Aug. 11, and noted that the district proposed multiple calendar options before recommending the adopted version. A district presenter said the calendar team listened to teacher and staff feedback that favored a later start and that a shortened first day can help students ease back into routines.
Board members raised concerns about parent confusion from a pattern of half‑day and late‑start schedules near the end of the school year. Administration explained that the district has traditionally scheduled the last day as a half day and that graduation timing is constrained by facility availability and existing bargaining agreements affecting which weekdays are allowable for graduation.
On emergency days, the administration explained that these are reserved for events when e‑learning is not possible (for example, a prolonged power outage). The district noted state guidance requires calendar planning for emergency days, and the administration said the district typically includes up to five emergency days in the calendar.
The board moved, seconded and approved the calendar in a roll‑call vote.
Next steps: The board will release the approved calendar to families and continue routine discussion about transportation and scheduling logistics at future meetings.
