CDC tweaks Neighborhood Services Unit mission and creates infrastructure working group

The Community Development Commission amended and approved the mission statement for Austin’s Neighborhood Services Unit and voted to form an infrastructure working group at its April 14 meeting.

Commissioners debated whether the mission should read aspirationally or describe operational goals. After discussion the commission added the phrase "aims to" so the mission now reads that the Neighborhood Services Unit "aims to improve the lives and health of people experiencing poverty by providing public health and social services and connecting residents of Austin and Travis County to community resources." The amendment was moved and seconded and passed by voice/hand vote.

Separately, commissioners proposed an infrastructure working group—limited to seven commissioners—tasked with auditing public infrastructure and CapMetro transit for ADA and Title VI compliance and other public‑safety issues. Several commissioners volunteered and staff confirmed working groups must request standing agenda time in advance. The motion to form the group with the volunteering members passed.

Commissioners said the mission change clarifies the unit’s goal without altering federally required language, and they described the working group as a short, data‑focused audit rather than a standing agenda item.
