Assembly recognizes Vaisakhi with HR 100, members emphasize cultural solidarity

On April 14 the Assembly adopted House Resolution 100 recognizing Vaisakhi, with Assemblymember Banes leading floor remarks about the holiday's significance to Sikh and South Asian communities.

Assemblymember Banes described Vaisakhi as a festival that "affirms the California Assembly's respect for this ancient festival and honors traditions that have long defined Sikh identity," noting its religious and cultural importance and the community's service traditions. The LGBTQ legislative caucus and other caucuses rose in support, and the sponsor asked members to accept coauthorship; the Clerk recorded 73 co-authors.

Members described Vaisakhi as a moment of service and community, and the sponsor invited members to wear a commemorative pin distributed at desks to symbolize the Sikh principles of justice and equality. The resolution is ceremonial and intended to recognize cultural diversity and inclusion; it was adopted by voice vote.

Assemblymembers urged colleagues to visit Gurdwaras (places of worship and community service) and to acknowledge the contributions of Sikh Californians to agriculture, public service and civic life.
