Planning commission approves abandonment of 16-foot utility and drainage easements at 1496 Arena Court

The Planning and Zoning Commission on April 29 approved a request to abandon two 16-foot public utility and drainage easements on property at 1496 Arena Court (Buena Vista Unit 4, Block 9, Lot 16).

Staff told the commission the easements along the property's eastern boundary limit the owner's ability to use the backyard and that outreach to utility companies and public works returned no objections. The city engineer reviewed the site and concluded the area is not currently used for drainage.

A public commenter flagged that the permit fee to remove an easement was $835 and said that seemed high; staff responded that fees vary by request type and cover the review, council consideration, and county recording that make the abandonment official.

After discussion, a commissioner made a motion to accept the item as written; the motion was seconded and carried 6–0.

The formal approval directs recording of the change with the county and updates to property records.
