The Allegany County commissioners approved a request from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to permit acquisition of parcel 1 of the former Mount Savage Refractories property—about 6.75 acres—so the land can be added to Wells Mountain State Park for additional access and recreation such as mountain biking, hiking, rock climbing and environmental education.
Administrator Jason Bennett said the county's approval is required for acquisitions in excess of 100 acres; he noted this parcel is smaller and that the transaction would be "essentially revenue neutral" for the county. Bennett added that the state will negotiate with the property owner and that no Allegany County funds would be used.
A motion to approve the DNR request was made, seconded and approved by the commissioners.
