The City of Battle Creek is asking residents to weigh in on housing as it updates the community master plan.
Mayor Mark Behnke said the city will host a housing strategy stakeholders meeting on Thursday, Feb. 19 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Department of Public Works, 150 South Kendall Street. The meeting will gather public input on what housing types fit neighborhoods, necessary infrastructure improvements and ways to prevent displacement as housing costs rise. The mayor said the agenda will also cover workforce housing, commuting patterns and housing types to support Battle Creek’s future growth; food and beverages will be provided.
The city released the first episode of a new “Battle Creek Connection” housing edition podcast. Planning Supervisor Darcy Smith appears in the episode to explain city efforts to address a housing shortage, steps to update the master plan, efforts to remove barriers to faster development, expansion of mixed-use zoning, encouragement of infill housing and support for accessory dwelling units. Behnke said the episode outlines how neighborhood councils and community surveys will guide the process.
Why it matters: the master-plan update and outreach can influence zoning, infrastructure priorities and programs intended to preserve affordability and shape neighborhood character.
