The Tampa City Council continued consideration of a proposed Veterans Advisory Committee ordinance to the April 16 meeting after hours of debate over membership, appointments and governance.
Legal staff presented a draft ordinance to create a committee to coordinate ceremonial activities, outreach and coordination with veterans organizations. Councilman Viera proposed allowing gold‑star family members in the committee but limiting those seats to no more than four; other council members urged that veterans be the majority of seats and sought fixed attendance expectations and staggered terms for continuity.
"I think this is going to be really, really great," Councilman Viera said, describing the board as a permanent part of civic culture, but added specifics should be adjusted to ensure veterans are prioritized and the panel functions. Councilwoman Hertek said she wanted a cap on family seats and clearer terms to ensure veterans are the committee’s focus.
Legal staff noted the ordinance requires quarterly meetings and that specific bylaws—such as attendance and removal for cause—are typically set by committees after formation. Council asked legal staff to return on April 16 with revisions, including language limiting gold‑star family seats to no more than four, adjustments to mayoral and council appointment counts, and suggestions for staggered terms and term length.
Public commenters asked that veterans remain predominant on the board and urged strong attendance rules. The council unanimously voted to continue the item and asked staff to draft the revised ordinance for first reading on April 16.
