Presenter says cost of living is top issue; urges online business licenses for Wichita City

The Presenter said the number one issue he hears from residents is the rising cost of living and urged Wichita City to make government more responsive by digitizing services.

"The number 1 issue I hear from residents is about the cost of living," the Presenter said, citing property taxes, inflation and higher grocery prices and saying many people are "working on very slim margins" and struggling to make ends meet. He said the city’s role is to let residents focus on family and work rather than on city hall business.

The Presenter framed the coming year’s top priority as improving responsiveness and efficiency in local government. He urged the city to "streamline processes and" adopt new technology so that routine transactions are faster and less costly for residents and businesses. "For example, all of our applications for business licenses should be done online," he said, adding that digital applications would spare small businesses the time and expense of pen-and-paper filings and mailed paperwork.

He said those steps would both save taxpayer dollars and position the city to be "good stewards of taxpayer dollars" while helping businesses move forward.
