Several Corona High students used public comment to urge the board to retain coach Bowers on campus, describing him as a mentor and crediting him with building successful wrestling and girls flag football programs.
Kristen Dizon, who identified herself as a team captain for Corona High’s wrestling team, told the board that Bowers “has taught me how to be a better version of myself” and asked the district to recognize his long service with an appropriate assignment. Kylie Martinez, another captain, provided a summary of program accomplishments that she attributed to Bowers’s leadership, saying he has coached for 34 years with 15 of those at Corona High and that the program has produced numerous CIF and state competitors; she asked the board to help “keep our coach at Corona High.”
Taylor Bell, speaking as a current wrestler, described Bowers as a key mentor who kept her focused and credited him with helping athletes who lack family support.
Board members thanked the speakers; no formal action was taken at the meeting. The speakers said they had circulated a petition and requested that the district consider assigning Bowers to a teaching position or another role that would allow him to remain on campus.
What comes next: the comments were entered into the public record; district staff may follow up with speakers and with HR about assignment options.
