A Civic Spark participant with AmeriCorps said they moved to Los Angeles to work in the film industry but later returned to school and joined Civic Spark, where a supervisor entrusted them with launching several local housing programs.
"I applied and was accepted, and I was very fortunate to have a supervisor who entrusted me with launching several different programs, including their home down payment program," the participant said, describing efforts to help people "start their lives." They said the work also included a separate home modification program "which helped elderly clients and those with disabilities so that they could stay in their home even as they age."
The speaker said they experienced housing insecurity during their first service term and relied on available resources such as legal aid and meetings with lawyers in Los Angeles, which strengthened their commitment to public service. "It really just solidified not only my need for public service, and I really wanna be part of that and make sure that everybody has access," they said.
The remarks were delivered as a personal account of service and program work; no formal motions or votes were recorded in this transcript. The participant closed by saying they were "really excited to get started."
