Sheriff says inmate who died in Cochise County jail was medically cleared earlier; autopsy pending

Cochise County law‑enforcement officials provided an update after an inmate was found unresponsive in a county jail cell.

Sheriff Mark Danos said the person arrested by a city police department had been taken to a hospital and cleared before entering the county jail. "Anybody comes in our jail has to go through a medical screening," Danos said, adding county medical staff and detention officers then attempted lifesaving measures after the inmate was found unresponsive.

The sheriff told listeners there was "nothing suspicious" reported to him and that initial information suggested a medical event rather than foul play, but he emphasized the county would await autopsy results before releasing a cause. "We don't wanna put out anything until we have the autopsy reports," Danos said.

He also pushed back against media speculation and pledged transparency: if the investigation finds suspicious circumstances, the sheriff said the office would disclose that next step. The sheriff credited jail medical staff for their emergency response and said detained persons receive medical screening upon intake.
