Residents ask council for a Palisade Lake memorial and press for traffic and feral‑cat solutions

Denise Croft and Barbara Barton presented a community project to the Mayfield Town Council on April 8 to commemorate Daniel Buckley Funk, the founder and early engineer of Palisade (Funks) Lake. Croft said the family will donate an original pioneer headstone and proposed a stone 'shadow box' and gazebo with interpretive panels; Barbara Barton described planned plaques and a celebration scheduled for August 8 at Manti and asked for town support and public donations.

"We're Representing a project at Palisade Lake for Barbara's ancestor, Daniel Buckley Funk, who was the original founder and engineer of Palisade Lake," Denise Croft told the council. Barbara Barton said the commemoration will include speakers and music and invited the council and community to participate.

Later in public comment a resident urged the council to address persistent speeding and noise on Main Street and adjacent approaches, citing frequent high speeds by trucks, motorcycles, ATVs and e-bikes and the use of jake brakes. The resident warned, "Somebody's gonna get killed this speed," and suggested physical calming (speed dips/bumps), signage, and coordination with county and state authorities on jurisdictional limits. Council members said they would brainstorm multiple solutions, including localized traffic-calming measures and potential noise signage; they noted some roads fall under county or state authority and that engineering/maintenance issues (snow removal) affect the choice of device.

The same public commenter raised concerns about an apparent overpopulation of unowned cats in one neighborhood and urged residents to stop feeding strays; staff and council discussed legal limits on handling animals, the lack of licensing for cats, and humane options for removal or trapping.

Council response: Speaker 2 thanked the presenters for the Palisade Lake proposal and said the project could be "exciting for our county." On traffic and animal control, the council said staff will review options and follow up with county or state partners as appropriate. No formal council action was taken on traffic-calming or a cat-control program during the meeting.
