Downtown merchants and resident urge delivery‑time limits to ease blocked streets

During public comment at the Idaho Falls City Council meeting, resident Matt Jacobson urged the council to consider a downtown delivery ordinance to reduce safety hazards created when delivery vehicles block travel lanes and handicap zones.

"The goal ... would be to eliminate during peak hours deliveries on street for the local distributors," Jacobson said, and he suggested excluding parcel carriers such as Amazon and UPS while directing local distributors to use alleys or parking lots with prior approval.

Jacobson provided photographs he said show delivery trucks blocking lanes, encroaching on handicap parking and stopping at intersections. He proposed a peak‑hour window (he suggested 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. as an example) and a downtown boundary for enforcement north of Broadway, south of Constitution, west of Yellowstone and east of Pat McDonald.

Terry Ireland, representing the Downtown Merchants Association, told the council the association "fully supports this proposal," and asked the city to help make the plan a reality.

Mayor (unnamed) told Jacobson the subject will be brought forward for a work session where the public will have additional opportunities to provide input.

The council did not take formal action on the request at the meeting; staff and council indicated the proposal will be discussed in a future work session where details such as exempted carriers, hours, and enforcement would be defined.
