Adelanto says CarMax service center has broken ground; multiple road projects scheduled

Adelanto officials told the City Council on April 8 that a 23-acre CarMax service and vehicle reconditioning center has broken ground in the city and is expected to support up to 225 direct and indirect jobs.

City Manager (name not specified) said the facility will operate as an auction and reconditioning center and will not be open to the general public. "The CarMax project represents a major milestone for the city of Adelanto and a significant step forward in unlocking future growth in this area of our community," the city manager said, adding that the facility will prepare vehicles for retail sale and facilitate dealer auctions.

In the same report staff provided schedules and funding details for several transportation and capital projects. The Seneca Road Rehabilitation project is a two-mile roadway improvement funded with Measure I dollars and was reported at $2,000,164. Pre-construction activities are under way, with a groundbreaking scheduled between April 23 and April 30, paving operations slated for May 4–8, and staff estimating project completion by May 22.

The Air Expressway rehabilitation is described as a roughly 2.5-mile corridor improvement between Highway 395 and Koala, with staff exploring an extension from Koala Road to Air Expressway and Adelanto Road. Surveying and geotechnical work are in progress; design and bidding are scheduled over the coming weeks, with construction anticipated to begin in September and targeted for completion in October.

Staff also updated the council on near-term facility work: Council Chambers concrete and electrical work is nearly finished and the audio system is being installed; Bauflower Park has been re-designed and will be readvertised for construction bids next week; and proposals for turf replacement at Marconi Park and Adelanto Stadium are due April 9 and will be reviewed by staff with a return to council in May.

The city manager framed the projects as part of a larger economic-development push to attract private investment and create local jobs. Staff did not provide final contract awards or contractor names in the meeting; those details are to be brought back to the council as each procurement advances.
