Council approves utilities expansion to serve new box hangar; low bidder recommended

Councilman Kirkpatrick summarized the airport development and the immediate need to extend water, sewer, a lift station and Wiley Post Road to serve a new box hangar and future hangar pads. "Essentially, we're building that new box hanger out there... I’m aware of multiple companies who have reached out who are in conversation with the BDA about renting once we get that thing built," he said.

Staff reported they solicited three bids and that KSL Dirtworks was the low bidder; staff and the city’s consultant recommended awarding the contract to the low bidder. Council highlighted that the Department of Veterans Affairs is providing funding for part of the work: "The good news is, the VA is using money that is not ours to make that work. So, it will not cost us anything, but we do still have to approve because we technically own that stuff," Councilman Kirkpatrick said.

Council voted to accept the low bid and move forward with the utilities extension; recorded roll call indicated the motion passed.

Why it matters: extending utilities and access roads supports ongoing airport development and could enable private investment or additional hangar construction; the city said VA funding will reduce direct local expense for this phase.

What’s next: staff will execute the contract and coordinate construction scheduling and related permitting. The council did not request additional funding at the April 6 meeting.
