Representative Newton secures passage to extend GPT sunset to 2032

Representative Newton won approval of a bill that extends the statutory sunset for the GPT program from 2027 to 2032, the panel chair announced after a unanimous voice vote.

The measure was presented as part of budget-related business. "We're extending the GPT sunset from 2027 to 2032," Representative Newton said in presenting the bill and added that earlier proposals to raise statutory caps were amended away so the caps would remain unchanged.

Representative Hayes asked whether the bill was part of the general budget agreement. "This is part of the general budget agreement that we have. Correct?" Hayes asked. Representative Newton responded that the bill only changes the sunset date and does not alter funding levels: "We're leaving the funding exactly the same what it has been." The presenter emphasized the change is timing-only, not an increase or decrease in current funding.

With no debate offered, the chair opened the voting queue. Members recorded their assent during the roll call, and the chair announced a final tally of nine ayes and zero nays, declaring the bill passed. Representative Newton thanked the chair after the vote.

The panel moved on to other business, including an announcement that Transit Day will take place Wednesday and that staff will visit members' offices for briefings and a photograph.
