SXSW organizers say 2026 was a comeback year for music, with strong Austin representation

Deb (Dev) Sherlock, SXSW director of music, and Brian Hobbs, vice president of the music festival, briefed the commission on SXSW 2026 and said the festival marked a strong rebound for music.

Sherlock said organizers invited roughly 250 Austin artists and counted about 332 showcase performances by local artists this year, with Austin representing nearly 20% of official showcase presenters. "We were at 250 this year, but overall number of performances... were at 332 this year," Sherlock said.

Hobbs said overall music attendance was up roughly 20% compared with 2025, the festival invited about 1,200 artists (up about 200 year‑on‑year) and added an extra night of programming, running seven nights of music for 2026. He noted renewed brand support from partners including Spotify, Under Armour, Rivian, Superhuman and Yahoo and cited high venue alcohol sales and wristband numbers as signals of strong audience engagement.

Commissioners asked about programming changes after leadership shifts at SXSW, international artist support and logistics without a central convention center. Organizers said the music team used more venues, provided backline at sites, expanded artist support webinars and reinforced visa‑entry guidance for international showcases.

Organizers and commissioners emphasized SXSW’s role in artist development and economic impact for the city; staff and commissioners said they will work to maintain support and visibility for Austin artists in future festival cycles.
