Austin resident urges renewed focus on distracted driving during Bike Month

Scott Johnson, a public commenter, asked the Mobility Committee to use April (National Distracted Driving Awareness Month) to amplify safety messaging and requested that council newsletters and the Vision Zero program include language to raise awareness. "April is national distracted driving awareness month," he told the committee, and he said the city previously used vehicle registration centers and CapMetro digital signs for related outreach.

Johnson asked staff to help update dated materials and said he was willing to coordinate directly with Transportation Public Works and the Vision Zero program to distribute content through monthly and twice‑monthly newsletters. He also noted distracted driving is now a leading cause of crashes and injuries and asked the committee to support renewed outreach efforts.

Chair Paige Ellis thanked Johnson for his comments; no committee action was taken.
