Mayor Lisa Birkenstock opened the April 2 meeting with a swearing-in ceremony for the city's newly appointed fire chief, Chief Olsen, presenting an appointment warrant dated April 2026 and asking the audience to join in welcoming him.
"Tonight, we proudly honor our new fire chief as he steps into this vital role," Birkenstock said, citing the department's central role in protecting lives and property. As part of the formal ceremony, Olsen raised his right hand, repeated the oath of office and accepted the responsibilities of the position.
In brief remarks after taking the oath, Chief Olsen thanked council members, Mayor Burton Shaw and his family. "I do not take that confidence and trust lightly," he said, describing the fire service as "a family" and emphasizing his commitment to serving residents and supporting firefighters.
The mayor noted the event immediately preceded the regularly scheduled City Council meeting and said the swearing-in would be followed by a short reception and the council's business agenda. There were no formal council votes tied to the ceremonial appointment during the event; the appointment warrant and oath concluded the public portion of the ceremony.
The city recorded the ceremony and invited the public to stay for a brief reception with the chief before the council meeting began.
