Board extends burn ban 30 days with exemptions; staff urges organizers to follow outdoor-entertainment ordinance

Rankin County commissioners voted to extend the county burn ban for 30 days and to include exemptions for certain commercial contractors, certified fireground managers and county fire services, provided burning is done in pits with equipment and oversight.

During public comment, a resident asked the board to extend the ban because forecast rainfall was low. The board added the extension to the agenda and approved it after discussion of safety concerns and exemptions. Staff described enforcement steps and the process for handling violations; during the exchange an attendee referenced enforcement fines.

Separately, an event organizer who identified himself as Tony Magnum asked about permits for outdoor events on private acreage. County staff explained the existing outdoor-entertainment ordinance requires an application, sheriff involvement, a privilege license issued through the tax collector and consideration of parking, safety and insurance. Staff said the ordinance—about 25 years old—is being reviewed and may be streamlined, but organizers must follow the current process for any events. The board advised Mr. Magnum to contact the sheriff's office first to initiate the required application process if he plans events in the county.
