Christy Bell, the library’s senior librarian for genealogy and Carlsbad history, updated the Historic Preservation Commission on the third‑grade art contest on May 13 and outlined the schedule for the June 18 celebration.
Bell said the contest invites third‑grade students to create two‑dimensional art depicting Carlsbad historic sites. This year the library has 8 participating schools across the service area, each with multiple classrooms; the program will select three winners from each participating school for a total of 24 winners. Teachers received contest instructions in April, and staff issued a reminder on May 1; the submission deadline is May 31 and artwork is to be dropped off at the library.
The awards celebration is scheduled for June 18 at 5:00 p.m. in the council chambers, where a proclamation for Historic Preservation Month will be presented. Winners will receive certificates and art kits; the library will display the artwork in the chamber during the presentation and at the library throughout the summer, with pieces returned to students after Labor Day. Staff asked for two commissioner volunteers to read winners’ names and hand out certificates and prizes; two commissioners indicated interest and staff will follow up.
Bell thanked library staff and partner organizations, and commissioners praised the program as an effective way to engage students with local history. No formal commission action was required.
The event details and volunteer requests will be finalized by staff before the June 18 celebration.
