The mayor presented a certificate and a check to an alternative education class and said the funds will help 13 students take a trip to Mound State Park to learn about the town's history. The presentation included a request that the teacher describe the class and how the funds would be used.
The teacher thanked the mayor "for your heart for education in this city," and described the group as an alternative class for students who had difficulty in regular classrooms. The teacher said the class had taken a test that day, that some students are expected to return to regular classes, and that staff are "working with the wonderful leadership of Miss Lesada" to facilitate that transition.
"We have 13 students in the class, and this money will help them to go to Mound State Park and learn about the history of this town," the teacher said, identifying the trip as the intended use of the funds.
The mayor praised a classroom instructor referenced in the remarks as Mr. Shumate, saying, "I've known Mr. Shumate for a long time, and you're very fortunate to have a teacher who really cares about all of you." He congratulated the students and wished them well on their test.
The visit concluded with thanks to the class for allowing the mayor and presenters into the classroom and encouragement for the students' future academic efforts.
