Dr. Reed presented a proposed adjustment to the district’s STEM administrative regulation to require applicants be residents by Nov. 1 of the applicant’s eighth-grade year instead of the current Jan. 1 date. "The November 1 timeline, it's it's easier to remember," Reed said, noting the date better aligns with the STEM application month and the district’s prospective residence policy.
Board members asked how residency would be proved and whether leases would count; Reed confirmed proofs that show residency by Nov. 1 (including leases) would satisfy the rule. A board member asked whether changing the deadline would simply shift nonresident applicants earlier; Reed said applications could still be submitted but would not be graded unless residency were established by Nov. 1, which would reduce time spent by STEM staff on ineligible applications.
President Blest and others said the change is intended to reduce administrative burden and to focus review resources on district residents; the board indicated a plan to move forward with updating the administrative guideline and to place the revised regulation on an upcoming agenda for formal adoption.
