The Riley County Commission approved a notice of award for construction of the Keith sanitary sewer improvements district and heard from Planning Director Amanda Webb that construction is scheduled to start in August and will last about 15 months.
"They are scheduled to start in August, and construction lasts approximately 15 months," Webb said, and she reported staff are pursuing supplemental USDA loan funds and continuing dialogue with EPA about possible state and tribal assistance. Webb told the board there is an approximate $250,000 shortfall in the project budget; staff will file a supplemental USDA application and seek other grant avenues.
Webb also said a previously anticipated donation of pipe material will not be available because the supplier is prioritizing disaster response elsewhere; she said staff will seek discounted supply options through local distributors and work with project consultants to find savings.
Why it matters: contractors will mobilize if final funding and contracts are completed; the commission approved the notice of award so staff can finalize contracting and proceed. Webb said staff remain engaged with federal grant offices and will follow up on potential funding streams that could close the remaining shortfall.
What's next: staff will proceed with contract work and pursue supplemental funding; commissioners asked for updates on grant progress and any change to the construction timeline.
