The Gainesville City Commission on April 2 voted unanimously to begin a public recruitment for city manager in October, after hearing options and timeline analysis from Human Resources Director Laura Graetz.
Graetz told commissioners the process usually runs 16 to 20 weeks and can cost between roughly $22,000 and $100,000 depending on the firm and scope. She recommended either beginning the search in August to include the fiscal-year timeline or waiting until October so any newly elected commissioners would be able to participate in candidate selection and interviews.
Commissioners debated tradeoffs between momentum and legitimacy. Several said a public search confers legitimacy and transparency; others said the city has a qualified interim and that launching a search close to elections could politicize the selection. Mayor advised waiting so incoming commissioners could vote on the final selection.
The motion to begin the search in October passed unanimously. Staff was directed to proceed with planning for an October start and to work with HR to develop a scope and budget for the recruitment.
