Village engineers briefed the Archbold Village Council on preliminary plans for a roundabout at County Road 24 and State Route 2 during the March 16 meeting.
David Charville, P.E., of Tetra Tech, and Village Engineer Dexter Krueger said the preliminary design is under review and identified a lack of a nearby drainage outlet as a driver for adding a new storm sewer around Township Road 24 and Westfield Drive with an outlet to the creek. Charville said sidewalks on Westfield will be extended to provide a crossing to the Dollar General and that outside truck aprons will be included in the design to accommodate agricultural equipment.
Charville and Krueger gave key dates and costs: preliminary design review continues, right-of-way design and final design work are planned from August 2026 through July 2027, and construction is scheduled to begin in May 2028. The estimated project cost is $3.6 million; Archbold’s share was presented as $720,000, including roughly $400,000 for water and sewer extension and then 10% of construction costs.
Mayor Brad Grime asked about closure duration; engineers said the intersection will be closed but local business access will be maintained, and estimated a full closure of 45 to 60 days. Council members asked about pedestrian signage and business access and were told the single-lane roundabout generally relies on signage and that Marathon will have two entrances (one from County Road 24 and one from State Route 2) with further discussions planned with local businesses.
The engineering team said the addition of water, sewer and sidewalks within the project will save the village time and money by reducing the need for separate future projects.
Next steps: complete right-of-way design, finalize construction documents through mid-2027, and proceed to bidding and construction preparation ahead of the May 2028 start date.
