Willacy County Commissioners on March 26 approved contracting United States Fugitive Apprehension and Transport to perform an out-of-state inmate pickup and transport for scheduled court proceedings.
Staff explained the vendor was selected after shopping for options and confirmed the vendor s paperwork (W-9 and billing information) was in order. The court was told the county s transport expenditures are running above the budgeted amount. "I think we've spent over close to $7,069.52," a department representative said, while the line item had been budgeted at $2,500 for the year.
Commissioners discussed whether to continue performing out-of-state transports in-house for in-state runs and to contract out for longer or out-of-state transports. Staff said using a vendor for out-of-state pickups reduces personnel hours and vehicle wear but adds contract costs; if expenditures exceed departmental budget the court can decide to move funds or require departments to request additional appropriations.
The court approved the item; staff said they would coordinate scheduling with the district clerk's office and proceed with the vendor when court notifications were received.
Next steps: staff will schedule the vendor pickup on the dates needed and return to the court during budget preparation if additional funding is required.
