The Southern York County School District board on March 19 authorized administration to solicit quotes for 550 student Chromebooks needed under the district's scheduled replacement plan for 2026-27.
Directors emphasized procurement timing: supply constraints and rapid price fluctuations mean the district could benefit from a multi-vendor RFQ with pricing guarantees that extend through the next board meeting. Several members said the purchase should be coordinated with a larger, multi-year instructional plan that examines how devices are used and whether future needs can be reduced through instructional redesign. "Buy what we need for next year while we pursue a three-year instructional plan," one director said.
Administration noted it has already collected Chromebook-usage and deployment data and will continue teacher engagement and planning through the district's comprehensive plan process. The RFQ motion passed and the board discussed contracting language to hold vendor pricing through the April vote period if possible.
What's next: Administration to issue the RFQ, seek quotes with a pricing-hold through the board's April meeting where feasible, and continue EdTech planning with teacher and curriculum input.
