The Northern Illinois University Board of Trustees voted to extend President Lisa C. Freeman's appointment for one year, effective July 1, 2027, through June 30, 2028, with no salary increase recommended for fiscal year 2028. Chair Montell Gales presented the recommendation and framed the extension as part of maintaining continuity while the university continues a major fundraising campaign and pursues long-term fiscal stability.
The board discussed Freeman's evaluations and leadership record before calling the question; trustees praised her work on enrollment, retention, curricular innovation and fiscal oversight. Trustee John Butler said the board's recent evaluations demonstrate "great confidence in the work of our president." Trustee comments emphasized consistency of leadership as important amid current political and economic pressures.
After the board approved the extension, Freeman addressed trustees. "I am very grateful for the board for asking me to extend my contract and for respecting and honoring my request for a simple one-year extension at the current terms," she said. Freeman added, "I want to share very clearly my intention to retire on 06/30/2028," saying the early notice will support thoughtful succession planning and minimize disruption.
The extension will continue the current salary and deferred compensation arrangements; the principal financial components were described in the board item and will be posted as required under Northern Illinois University law. The board did not amend the salary terms as part of the action.
The board took the vote in open session and carried the motion. The extension and Freeman's retirement announcement set a procedural timeline for leadership transition planning; the board did not vote on next steps for succession during the public meeting.
