Hudson athletics proposes SALT student leadership, clearer hazing rules and mandatory education

The district’s athletics office presented proposed changes to the athletics code of conduct on March 9 focused on student leadership, coach development and a stronger approach to hazing.

Athletic director Aaron (speaker identified by colleagues) described a rebrand of Athletes Making Progress as SALT (Student Athlete Leadership Team), a coaches' council for regular professional development, and plans to deliver at least two advisory lessons each year districtwide addressing hazing definitions and reporting. Aaron said the code will include unified definitions, a three‑level progression for violations and an explicit 0‑tolerance statement for hazing that distinguishes non‑legal discipline from conduct that may trigger legal intervention under state statute.

Board members emphasized measurement and reporting: they asked for clear, anonymous reporting pathways so students and parents can raise concerns without fear of retaliation; they also urged outreach to parents and broad school‑wide lessons so hazing is not perceived as only an athletics issue. The athletic office said coaches and the coaches' council would be part of the implementation and that the proposed code will be refined to improve clarity and sustainability.

The board did not take a formal vote on code changes at the meeting; staff said they will continue work with coaches, parents and legal counsel before returning with a final draft for consideration.
