Clayton council certifies election results; Trupiano chosen mayor, Wan elected vice mayor 4-1

The Clayton City Council adopted a resolution certifying the Contra Costa County Elections Office’s canvass of returns from the Nov. 5, 2024, municipal election and completed its annual reorganization on Dec. 17.

City Clerk Stephanie Cabrera-Brown reviewed the county canvass results and presented Resolution 41-2024 declaring the election outcomes. There were no public comments on the canvass item. A motion to adopt the resolution was moved by Councilmember Wan, seconded by Councilmember Cloven, and recorded as passing 5-0.

In the council’s reorganization, Mayor Diaz nominated Vice Mayor Trupiano to serve as mayor for 2025; the motion passed unanimously. For the vice mayor position, Councilmember Diaz nominated Councilmember Wan, and Councilmember Tillman nominated herself. After public comments that included supporters for Tillman, the council voted to select Councilmember Wan to serve as vice mayor for 2025; the minutes record the vote as 4-1 (Ayes: Enea, Diaz, Wan, Mayor Trupiano; No: Councilmember Tillman). The minutes note per Council guidelines that no separate vote was taken on Tillman’s nomination because the first candidate to secure at least three votes receives the position.

The council also approved the 2025 meeting schedule (amended to add a Jan. 21 meeting) as part of the consent calendar. The minutes do not list additional procedural steps or appeals related to the reorganization vote.
