Clayton council continues consideration of new staff classifications after public concern

The Clayton City Council on Nov. 19 received a staff proposal to add several new job classifications to the city’s staffing plan and continued the items after public comment raised budgetary concerns.

Assistant City Manager Regina Rubier presented five recommended classification changes and pay ranges: Administrative Clerk (full time; $54,580.31–$66,342.71), Community Services Coordinator (full time; $72,449–$88,062), Community Services Leader (part time; $17.92–$21.23 per hour), Senior Management Analyst (full time; $126,267–$153,478), and Senior Planner (full time; $108,021–$131,300). The Senior Planner recommendation also deletes the Community Development Director and Assistant Planner positions from the FY 2024–25 budget.

Members of the public — identified in the meeting record as Doug, Ed Miller, Keith Hayden and Lauren Stevens — spoke expressing concerns about the proposed positions and the related budget adjustments; one speaker noted she currently works for the city and discussed relevant experience. Following remarks, the council did not vote on the proposals and continued Items 8c–8g to the call of the council for further consideration.

Councilmembers did not record a final decision or specify follow-up materials during the meeting. The continuation preserves council ability to revisit compensation, classification language and budget impacts at a later date.
