At the public hearing on the FY27 school budget, Corine Keyes, who identified herself as a math interventionist at Dolbear, told the Wakefield School Committee that some elementary interventionists still earn $25 an hour and that many have not received a raise in years.
"Your elementary interventionists are still being paid $25 an hour," Keyes said, calling attention to long‑standing pay levels for both math and reading interventionists and asking whether the FY27 budget includes funds to increase interventionist hours or pay.
The Chair asked whether interventionist pay is governed by collective bargaining or by outside contracts. Tom Markham and Dr. Lyons clarified the roles in question are provided through contracted services rather than as part of a bargaining unit. After discussion, committee members said they would take the feedback and look into possible changes.
What happened next: The committee did not make any budget commitments during the hearing; members said they will review the comment as part of the budget subcommittee process and at the full committee vote scheduled for April 1.
The exchange was part of a short public‑comment period during which the committee also fielded a question about adding preschool capacity at Greenwood Elementary.
