Superintendent presents $67.7 million FY2026–27 budget at Auburn School Committee hearing

On April 1, 2026, the Auburn School Committee held a public hearing on the proposed FY2026–27 Auburn School Department budget. Superintendent Sue Doris told the committee the revised total proposed budget, including adult education, is $67,685,744, a 4.9% increase over FY26, with a recommended local contribution of $21,688,509 — a 3.3% increase.

Doris said the budget’s primary cost drivers are rising health insurance costs, increased special-education obligations and transportation expenses. To limit the local impact, she said the district is pursuing staffing adjustments (including the elimination of three positions and the suspension diversion program), efficiency measures and strategic use of available revenue and fund balance. "This proposed budget continues to align with the school committee's strategic goals, prioritizing student outcomes, responsible financial stewardship, and long term sustainability," Doris said.

The chair opened the hearing to public comment; no members of the public addressed the committee. Doris also pointed members to agenda links containing the AMS project presentation and the City Council memo on AMS, noting those materials were provided for information.

The hearing did not result in a final vote on the budget. The committee was reminded of a joint school committee–city council budget workshop scheduled for Monday, April 6 at 5:30 p.m. in Council Chambers, where further budget discussions are expected.
