INDOT gives conceptual updates on US‑30 corridor; major work likely years away

Staff and NDOT/INDOT representatives briefed the commission on conceptual alternatives and timing for improvements along US‑30 and nearby intersections. The presentation noted that studies (PEL and alternatives analysis) are ongoing and that while some near‑term safety improvements may be possible, large‑scale interchange construction is tentatively scheduled for 2030–2031.

The staff presentation explained that proposed fixes such as median U‑turns are under consideration at high‑crash locations including 300 East and State Road 5, and that planned work will include traffic‑analysis and consideration of impacts to local access and development. Commissioners were asked to keep INDOT informed as local development proceeds, as project priorities and scope may change.

Staff also raised a separate 600 East/US‑30 crossing alternative and said Section 106 historic‑preservation review has been requested for a wide area of disturbance; they urged commissioners to note potential historic impacts as the studies advance.

No formal action was taken on the corridor items during the meeting; staff said they will continue to coordinate with INDOT and report back.
