Votes at a glance: What the New Kent Board approved at its March work session

The New Kent County Board of Supervisors recorded the following actions at its March work session.

Rabies clinic: Motion by Ms. Pearson to approve the 2026 rabies clinic at New Kent Middle School on April 25 (7:30–11:30 a.m.), vaccinating at $10 per dose; proceeds after costs to go to the New Kent Animal Welfare Fund. Vote: unanimous (Ayes recorded by Ms. Watkins).

Tallyville Waste Water Pump Station change order: Ms. Lang presented three change-order items (12" culvert and grading; remove/replace deteriorated manhole; additional asphalt). Motion to approve change order totaling $86,432 was moved and passed (voice vote recorded).

Historic roadside markers: The board approved four local historic marker applications submitted by the Tidewater and Big Bend Foundation (Iden Meadow Farm, Shuttlewood, Spring Hill and one other). The applicant (John Poindexter noted by the board) agreed to pay all sign costs; the program allows placement in the right-of-way via DHR/VDOT approval. Vote: unanimous.

Budget transfer — old animal shelter renovation: Motion by Ms. Stewart to transfer $45,000 from remaining animal-shelter construction funds to renovate the old animal shelter for storage and a workshop for General Services; motion passed unanimously.

Lennar utilities agreement: Board authorized the county administrator to execute an agreement with Lennar Corporation to upsize a force main and accept a $100,000 maintenance deposit to support the Ayles Ford development in the Kentland PUD. Vote: unanimous.

PSAP resiliency grant application: Staff was authorized to submit a PSAP resiliency grant application (approximately $350,000, no local match) supporting translation, cybersecurity and E911 operating costs. Vote: unanimous.

Anthem Local Choice health plan renewal: Board authorized the county administrator to execute FY27 employee health plan renewal documents with Anthem Local Choice, approving new coverage categories and authorizing staff to sign final contracts. Vote: unanimous.

Sheriff hiring authorization: Motion to authorize the sheriff to begin the hiring process for three new patrol deputies using available funds passed with recorded poll (Stewart Aye; Evelyn No; Moyer Aye; Pearson Aye; Stiers Aye).

Closed session: The board voted to enter closed session under Va. Code §2.2-3711(a)(1) and (a)(7) to interview a candidate for county attorney and to consult with counsel regarding pending litigation involving Vertical Bridge/Towers LLC vs. New Kent County. The chair said no public announcement would follow closed session.
