The Canyons Board of Education voted unanimously on March 19 to appoint Dr. McKay Robinson as the district's next superintendent.
President Schill called the roll and announced the motion passed without opposition. Board member Nybar moved to appoint Robinson and a fellow board member seconded the motion before members spoke in support.
The board framed the appointment as a choice for continuity. President Schill said the district preferred an internal candidate to lead ongoing initiatives such as the Canyons Innovation Center and to address enrollment challenges. Schill noted the board's appreciation for outgoing superintendent Dr. Rick Robbins, who joined the district amid the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and served six years.
Board member Nybar, who made the motion, praised Robinson's record in elementary education and interim leadership, saying, "I personally believe that McKay Robinson is the man of the hour." Board member Lewis reported hearing "unprompted glowing reviews" from school administrators and described Robinson as having a "cool head" and "human-centered leadership." Andrew Bridal said he had known Robinson as a parent and PTA leader and expressed "absolutely full faith" in his ability to work with people and advance initiatives.
The board discussed Robinson's background in district roles. President Schill summarized Robinson's experience saying he has been a teacher, principal of two Canyons elementary schools, director of Canyons elementary schools and assistant superintendent, and that he would be able to "hit the ground running." The board characterized the hire as the district's fifth superintendent and emphasized stability during ongoing capital projects.
After the vote, Dr. McKay Robinson addressed the board and community. "At the center of every decision we make will be what is best for students," Robinson said, adding he would be "visible, accessible and engaged with our community" and committed to building trust through consistency and follow-through. He thanked the board, outgoing leadership including Dr. Rick Robbins and Leon Wilcox, district staff and his family.
President Schill invited the board to pose for a photograph with Robinson. The board then left to attend a public hearing at Park Lane Elementary; the meeting was adjourned following the photo opportunity. The district's communications office said it will post Robinson's biography and additional background information on the district website and social channels.
