Staff member (S2) updated the Monona Landmarks Commission on a draft plaque for a proposed Charles Lindbergh landmark, explaining additions to the text and proposed imagery.
‘‘So I've talked to Rick, and he let me know that the Nazi model that Lindbergh had accepted may have been on behalf of The US or, like because he was spying on the Germans apparently or, on behalf of The US,’’ Staff member (S2) said, summarizing information they had incorporated into new draft wording. S2 said the draft also notes Lindbergh’s trans‑Atlantic flight, contributions to medical technology and the highly publicized abduction of his child.
S2 said they would workshop the text with groups Rick Bernstein suggested and will obtain price estimates for photography and for the plaque. Commissioners discussed photo selection and captions, debating whether to include images of Lindbergh receiving medals or a Time magazine cover; several members said not to overcrowd the plaque and suggested using two images at most.
Commissioners did not take a formal vote on final wording at the meeting. Staff will continue outreach to community groups and stakeholders and return with a revised draft and pricing information.
