Germantown adopts 2026 Parks and Recreation Master Plan update, prioritizes Cameron Brown improvements

The Board of Mayor and Aldermen adopted the 2026 Germantown Comprehensive Parks and Recreation Master Plan update on March 23, endorsing a multi‑tiered roadmap for park investments over the next decade.

Parks Director Natalie Ruffin said the update covers 29 parks and more than 10 miles of greenway and supports Germantown’s continuing CAPRA accreditation cycle. Key priorities include improved connectivity and accessibility across the system, modernization of aging facilities, and a prioritized Cameron Brown Park reinvestment project that would add parking and a multipurpose synthetic turf field to support relocated programming from Houston Lehi Park.

Director Ruffin also highlighted demographic shifts — noting the 65-plus population has grown to 23.6% of the city — as a reason to prioritize Pickering Center upgrades and senior programming. The plan recommends expanding trails, adding pickleball courts (three at Riverdale Park and two at Cameron Brown were cited among recent additions), and addressing a citywide shortfall in baseball/softball fields.

Vice Mayor Gibson and Alderman Hicks commended staff for the work supporting CAPRA accreditation and the plan’s alignment with the city’s Germantown Forward 2035 strategic vision. The Parks and Recreation Commission had approved the update at its Jan. 22 meeting; the board’s adoption was unanimous.

Next steps: The update will guide capital planning and grant eligibility; staff signaled Tier 1 projects (accessibility, connectivity and key facility upgrades) will be prioritized for funding and design work.
