Willard awarded federal support for 750 North Hop Trail crossing; city match about $10,008

Planner Maddie told the council that a grant request originally submitted years ago for a Hop Trail crossing at 750 North and 200 West was initially awarded about $85,000 but updated project estimates are now near $250,000 because of increases in material and construction costs.

Maddie said the Wasatch Front Regional Council (WFRC) Transcom/TAC approved the additional funds and that Willard’s local match obligation would be just under $11,000 (the planner gave a more precise figure of approximately $10,008.20). She said the local match would likely be budgeted next year and would probably come from the city streets fund.

The project scope will include flashing beacons, new pathway work, curb and gutter and sidewalks; Maddie emphasized it is more than a paint-and-sign crosswalk. The next steps are committee approval in April, a planning/orientation meeting to kick off design, and coordination with UDOT and other stakeholders during the planning process.

Council members expressed support for moving forward and for staff to include the match in next year’s budget if needed; staff said they will coordinate with engineering and the WFRC as the project advances.
