Albia council OKs ad for part-time code enforcement job, denies pool sewer relief and approves mowing abatements

At its June 15, 2020 meeting the Albia City Council approved advertising for a Code Enforcement Officer position at 30 hours per week with wages of $17.00 per hour.

Council member Merle Regenold moved to approve advertising for the position and Council member Dennis Conley seconded; the motion carried 6-0. Council discussed hours and wages before voting; no additional hiring steps were recorded in the minutes.

Separately, after discussion the council voted 6-0 not to relieve sewer rental charges for a pool fill at 814 South 2nd Street. The motion was moved by Merle Regenold and seconded by Scott Kelly. The record does not specify the amount of the sewer charge or any appeal process beyond the denial.

The council also approved mowing abatement charges to be sent to the Monroe County Treasurer for collection as property tax on four properties: 113 Benton Ave West ($300.00), 809 C Ave East ($300.00), 21 11th Ave West ($300.00), and 115 D Ave West ($300.00). That motion was moved by Merle Regenold and seconded by Dennis Conley and carried 6-0.

Mayor Richard P. Clark reported a truck and trailer parked on South 2nd Street blocking the roadway and noted a request had been made to restrict parking on one side of the street. City Clerk Linda Heller provided an update on payment for a hotel demolition and citizen interest in a train slide removed from the Albia Aquatic Center. City Attorney Bob Breckenridge reminded the council of employee-complaint policies and the council’s role in those processes.

Next steps: the clerk’s office will place the code enforcement job advertisement and the county treasurer will be notified for collection of the mowing abatements.
