Several Albia residents urged the City Council on May 17 to drop or rework a proposal that would require citywide mandatory garbage pickup, saying they want to choose their own hauler.
During public comment, Cindy See, Pat Beals and Jack Briggs told the council they did not support mandatory pickup and preferred the ability to select a private hauler. Councilmember Brandon Williams said the proposal had been raised to ensure all residents have access to garbage service and argued that a single hauler could improve street conditions. Councilmember Kathy Mobley acknowledged residents’ desire for choice and a public forum was suggested to gather wider input.
The council did not take formal action at the meeting but asked Councilmembers Leslie Hill and Brandon Williams to research the issue further and report back. The discussion focused on balancing resident choice with operational considerations for street maintenance and service consistency.
Why it matters: Mandatory collection policies can affect household costs, competition among haulers and curbside operations that influence street wear; the council’s next steps will determine whether the city pursues a formal ordinance or holds broader public engagement.
Next step: Hill and Williams will research options and the council may schedule a public forum to collect resident feedback before any ordinance is proposed.
