Councilor Morella Mora told the Council she has observed and heard reports of a significant increase in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity in the Columbia River Gorge beginning Nov. 7, and described the impacts on immigrant residents, including fear, disruptions to daily life and mental-health strain.
Mora said affected residents — including documented community members — are fearful of traveling or accessing services, and that local organizations and workers have reported firsthand accounts of harm. She said the immigrant community is asking for help, support and accurate information and that she will continue providing education, 'know-your-rights' resources, emotional-regulation support and community coordination.
Mora thanked Mayor Keethler and Police Chief Mike Hepner for being responsive and for steady support, and she urged other regional leaders to take similar actions. Councilors Jason Hartmann and David Lindley expressed support for Mora’s remarks and said they stand ready to assist where possible.
No formal Council action was taken at the meeting; Mora’s comments were recorded as Council communications and a request to continue offering resources and coordination.
