At its Aug. 21 meeting, the Cosmopolis City Council received public-safety updates, community-service announcements and committee reports.
A city official summarized crime statistics, current staffing shortages and a reimbursement request submitted to the state that could provide significant funding if approved. The official also recounted a multi-agency search-and-rescue that located an injured lost mushroom picker after several hours, praising the coordinated response from emergency management, sheriff's deputies and volunteer teams.
Chief Allen reported the police department received a $4,000 grant from the Washington State Department of Natural Resources to purchase computers. He also said the department submitted a grant request to replace or adjust hydrant ports in town to improve response compatibility.
Council members discussed concerns about roughly a dozen utility accounts that may be drawing minimum charges despite being disconnected. One councilmember suggested asking the PUD to audit those accounts or having city staff inspect the lines to identify and close unused meters to reduce unnecessary spending.
Mayor Springer highlighted Timberland Library's monthly outreach visits at Lions Park and ongoing story-time programming at Highland Park, and provided an update on Festival in the Park (about 18 vendors confirmed so far; organizers have contacted roughly 43 potential vendors). The meeting also included routine committee reports and the consent agenda.
With no further public comment, the council adjourned.
