The Granite Falls City Council unanimously appointed Councilmember Matthew Hartman as mayor for a two-year term at its Jan. 7, 2026 meeting. Councilmember David Griggs nominated Hartman; Councilmember Bruce Straughn moved to close nominations and Councilmember Steven Glenn seconded the motion. The Council voted aye unanimously.
Under Granite Falls' council-manager form of government, the City Council selects the mayor from among the elected councilmembers rather than the mayor being elected directly by voters. After the vote confirming Hartman, Mayor Matthew Hartman nominated Councilmember David Griggs for mayor pro tem. That nomination was likewise approved unanimously following a motion by Councilmember Bruce Straughn and a second by Councilmember Steven Glenn.
The selections were procedural and received no opposition. The newly confirmed mayor and mayor pro tem will serve two-year terms under the city's governance rules. Council actions at the meeting also included routine consent items and multiple contract approvals.
The Council's next regular meeting schedule and a 6 p.m. work session on several administrative topics were noted by the City Manager. The meeting adjourned at 8:25 p.m.
