Spring Place Elementary students described their participation in the Georgia Department of Education s first day for service, reporting two community service projects: visiting residents at Glenwood and a recycling education activity with Keeping Murray Beautiful.
A speaker summarized the Glenwood visit, saying students made crafts, provided snacks and spent time talking with residents about their school and initiatives. Students said the experience brought smiles and positive reactions from the residents.
Students also described hands-on recycling activities at Keeping Murray Beautiful, including relay races and hot-potato-style games using materials from recycling bins. One student said the activities combined learning with play and valued doing them with friends.
Speakers emphasized that engaging in community service at a young age promotes a sense of belonging and investment in the community and supports academic and social development. They said cleaning up trash helps protect animals and contributes to safety and well-being.
