Mayor Beth Sweeney visits Whispering Oaks to meet residents, hears praise for trees and fiscal stewardship

Mayor Beth Sweeney visited the Whispering Oaks neighborhood as part of her "Mondays with the Mayor" outreach to meet residents where they live and hear local priorities.

At the gathering, HOA president Sam Iondorio thanked the mayor for visiting and described Whispering Oaks as a growing community. "We have, in Whispering Oaks, we have 63 home sites and a couple of 100 residents," Iondorio said, adding that the association is solvent and places a high priority on resident safety.

The exchange underscored local concerns that tend to dominate small-neighborhood priorities: security and fiscal stewardship. Iondorio noted ongoing home construction in the neighborhood and said he hoped the city would pursue policies that could lower taxes.

Resident Andrea Peeler, who said she moved to St. Augustine from Hawaii, described the neighborhood’s climate and plant life. "We moved, to Saint Augustine from Hawaii... and we find, everything to be quite comparable," Peeler said, adding that she enjoys the area’s varied vegetation and plein-air painting opportunities.

Mayor Sweeney thanked the residents for hosting the visit and commented on Whispering Oaks' tree canopy. The mayor closed the visit by thanking attendees and saying she would continue the Mondays with the Mayor series.

The discussion was informal and focused on neighborhood character and quality-of-life topics; no formal actions or policy decisions were recorded at the visit.
